As I said in my last comment, I think this is a very difficult question, both for parents and for teachers. Many people in the UK believe that there are more badly behaved children now because no one smacks them anymore, but I suppose there are also fewer cases of abuse and children getting injured.

As some of you said, I think the key point is the parent or teacher’s intention. In some ways, the system we used to have in my primary school made sense – if you had been naughty, the punishment was administered by the headmistress, not by the teacher whose class you had been naughty in. That removed the risk of teachers just hitting out because they were angry. When that happens, there is a real danger of serious injury being caused.

Anyway, I don’t think it is a problem that we can solve here, but it was good to get a Japanese perspective on the topic. It’s good to see that no one voted for option 3! (Kattie, if you are reading, I would love to know what you think about this.)

Here is some feedback on your comments.

I think parents can hit their children under certain circumstances.
I think parents should be able to …

The Osaka’s case is inexcusable
The Osaka case…

but my view for corporal punishment has changed when I heard …
but my views on corporal punishment changed when I heard …

Have you ever heard of him?
Nice to see someone asking this correctly!

Hearing this, Mr Mizutani commented like this :
Hearing this, Mr Mizutani commented:

As hard as it might be to believe but their parents didn’t complain…
Nice sentence, but you don’t need “but.”

most teachers tend to turn blind eyes to their colleagues’ mistakes
I think the phrase you want is “turn a blind eye to.”

He didn’t report it to the local education board, because he had a fear to get a poor evaluation.
… because he was scared of getting a poor evaluation.

I forgot her name though.
This is okay, but did you know that you can also say, “I forget her name” when you mean that you can’t remember now?

Some of my co-workers(teachers) often complain their minor injuries from students.(
often complain about…

One of my son’s teacher was even broken one of her rib
One of my son’t teachers even had her rib broken..
