Thanks for all the comments, and thanks YU for doing the translation again. I don’t know how you find the time! As I said in my last comment, I think this is a very difficult question, both for parents and for teachers. Many people in the UK believe that there are more badly behaved children now because no one smacks them anymore, but I suppose there are also fewer cases of abuse and children getting injured. <\/p>\n

As some of you said, I think the key point is the parent or teacher’s intention. In some ways, the system we used to have in my primary school made sense – if you had been naughty, the punishment was administered by the headmistress, not by the teacher whose class you had been naughty in. That removed the risk of teachers just hitting out because they were angry. When that happens, there is a real danger of serious injury being caused. <\/p>\n

Anyway, I don’t think it is a problem that we can solve here, but it was good to get a Japanese perspective on the topic. It’s good to see that no one voted for option 3! (Kattie, if you are reading, I would love to know what you think about this.)<\/p>\n
