As I expected, most of you do not have any experience with guns at all, and I think that is a very good thing. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Like Japanese people, British people find it very hard to understand American attitudes to guns, but for some people, the right to own a gun is almost like a religion. <\/p>\n<p>The pro-gun lobby group in the US is called the National Rifle Association, and they are very powerful. Before he died in 2008, the actor Charlton Heston used to be one of the main spokespeople for the group. <\/p>\n<p>After the massacre at Columbine High School, the director Michael Moore made a movie called <em>Bowling for Columbine<\/em>. He visited Heston&#8217;s house and interviewed him. Here is a video of it. This caused quite a stir in America at the time. If you watch it, you will see why. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"395\" height=\"225\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g5j-l0fnT4Y\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here is some feedback on your comments.<\/p>\n<p>I thought you\u2019ve told us you lived in the US when you were very small.<br \/>\n<strong>I think you told us that&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nI wonder what are the requirements for getting a license to have a gun in Japan.<br \/>\n<strong>I wonder what the requirements are for &#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nthere are a lot of American soldiers there.<br \/>\n<strong>This is a nice example of the use of two different &#8220;there&#8221;s in one sentence.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nWhy his father didn\u2019t tell him that a real gun?<br \/>\n<strong>Why didn&#8217;t his father tell him that it was a real gun?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nIf he had owned it legally, he wouldn\u2019t have arrested on suspicion of weapons violation.<br \/>\n<strong>If he had owned it legally, he wouldn&#8217;t have been arrested on &#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nIf I found a gun in the teacher\u2019s room or my house, I would presume it\u2019s fake.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8230; I would presume it was a fake.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nMoreover, how can you tell they\u2019re real bullets?<br \/>\n<strong>Nice sentence.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nI was only 5 to 8 when I lived in San Francisco, so I don\u2019t think they would have told me even if they did.<br \/>\n<strong>Nice sentence.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nSorry, maybe the word \u201cirrelevant\u201d is not appropriate. Should I say \u201cunrelated\u201d instead?<br \/>\n<strong>The best word would actually be &#8220;foreign.&#8221; Guns are something so foreign to me &#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nI used a fake in the play I acted<br \/>\n<strong>I once used an imitation gun in a play I acted in. (&#8220;Fake&#8221; is not wrong, but I wanted to introduce another common word.)<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nThis article reminds me of a story of \u670d\u90e8\u304f\u3093.<br \/>\n<strong>I remember that. It was a terrible story. Unfortunately, some American police officers are a bit trigger-happy.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s really sad and tragic for both of the families.<br \/>\n<strong>Nice sentence.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nThe former PM, Taro Aso, was once a representative in the Olympics in clay shooting.<br \/>\n<strong>Not wrong, but we would usually say, &#8220;&#8230; once represented Japan in the Olympics at clay shooting.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nHis parents have been working hard appealing the strict gun control in the U.S after his death.<br \/>\n<strong>His parents have been fighting hard for stricter gun control in the U.S. since his death.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nbut he\u2019s never told me that he had a gun at home there.<br \/>\n<strong>but he&#8217;s never mentioned having had a gun at home while he was there.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nHow tragic it is!<br \/>\n<strong>That would be really tragic! (We don&#8217;t really use &#8220;How (adj) it is&#8221; in modern English.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019m sure situations must have changed a lot.<br \/>\n<strong>I&#8217;m sure things must have changed a lot.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nBy the way, if any of you are following &#8220;bitsofenglish&#8221; on Twitter, I am going to start tweeting all the nice sentences I see on your comments as soon as I see them.
