I have read a couple of articles recently about proposals to legalise casinos in Japan. I must admit that I was a bit confused at first, because I thought they were already legal. <\/p>\n
The reason I thought this was that I used to have a student who told me that he had a part-time job in one, but I just googled it, and it seems that they are indeed illegal at the moment. I wonder where my student was working! <\/p>\n
Anyway, a lot of people think that legalising casinos would give a huge boost to Japan’s economy. Many of the Japanese people who currently go to other countries to gamble would be able to spend their money at home, and it would also be very good for the tourism industry. <\/p>\n
Of course, casinos also bring problems, most of which are connected to organised crime. The worry is that if casinos are built, they will provide groups like the yakuza with an opportunity to make huge amounts of money legally. This could lead to an increase in crime and other problems. <\/p>\n
Another issue is dealing with gambling addicts, although as Japan already has many different forms of gambling such as keirin<\/em>, keiba<\/em>, and pachinko, I can’t see how adding casinos into the mix would make a big difference.<\/p>\n So what do you think?
