I think the idea of just writing one comment each per week was interesting, and it is definitely easier for me to give feedback when we have a lot of short comments from different people. Having said that, it would be nice to have some discussion as well, so I was thinking that maybe next week we could try one comment per day instead one per week just to see what happens. That would give people a chance to discuss the issues without the exchanges developing into long, complicated conversations. What do you think?<\/p>\n
On the subject of tattoos, I have always thought it would be nice to have one on my upper arm, but I never got one for two reasons. The first is that I love onsens, so I don’t want to do anything that might get me banned. The second is that I am too chicken! I would probably end up telling the artist to stop halfway through, which would definitely not be a good look.<\/p>\n
Tsuneko’s comment was particularly interesting for me because when I went to Australia last year, the thing that surprised me most was the number of young girls who had tattoos. I don’t have anything against tattoos, but I don’t think that children under the age of 18 should be allowed to have them. Maybe I am just being old-fashioned, but I don’t think that someone who is 16 is ready to make a decision about something that will stay with them for the rest of their life. <\/p>\n
As for the Osaka case, I don’t think that a person’s tattoos should have any relevance to an employer unless they affect his or her ability to do the job. Having said that, I read in the article that a child had seen this particular woman’s tattoos and been scared by them, so it’s not a straightforward problem. Generally speaking, Western people tend to think that employers have no right to say anything about their employees’ private lives, but I know that is not the case in Japan. <\/p>\n
