Corporal Punishment (Feedback)

Thanks for all the comments, and thanks YU for doing the translation again. I don’t know how you find the time! As I said in my last comment, I think this is a very difficult question, both for parents and for teachers. Many people in the UK believe that there are more badly behaved children now because no one smacks them anymore, but I suppose there are also fewer cases of abuse and children getting injured.

As some of you said, I think the key point is the parent or teacher’s intention. In some ways, the system we used to have in my primary school made sense – if you had been naughty, the punishment was administered by the headmistress, not by the teacher whose class you had been naughty in. That removed the risk of teachers just hitting out because they were angry. When that happens, there is a real danger of serious injury being caused.

Anyway, I don’t think it is a problem that we can solve here, but it was good to get a Japanese perspective on the topic. It’s good to see that no one voted for option 3! (Kattie, if you are reading, I would love to know what you think about this.)

Here is some feedback on your comments.

I think parents can hit their children under certain circumstances.
I think parents should be able to …

The Osaka’s case is inexcusable
The Osaka case…

but my view for corporal punishment has changed when I heard …
but my views on corporal punishment changed when I heard …

Have you ever heard of him?
Nice to see someone asking this correctly!

Hearing this, Mr Mizutani commented like this :
Hearing this, Mr Mizutani commented:

As hard as it might be to believe but their parents didn’t complain…
Nice sentence, but you don’t need “but.”

most teachers tend to turn blind eyes to their colleagues’ mistakes
I think the phrase you want is “turn a blind eye to.”

He didn’t report it to the local education board, because he had a fear to get a poor evaluation.
… because he was scared of getting a poor evaluation.

I forgot her name though.
This is okay, but did you know that you can also say, “I forget her name” when you mean that you can’t remember now?

Some of my co-workers(teachers) often complain their minor injuries from students.(
often complain about

One of my son’s teacher was even broken one of her rib
One of my son’t teachers even had her rib broken.. (A-Z: have/get something done)

I don’t think what Fumie explains(=teachers use corporal punishment to protect themselves and other students) is corporal punishment or abuse, but I think it is a kind of 正当防衛.
I don’t think that what Fumie is talking about is really corporal punishment or abuse – it’s just self-defence.

Also, I can’t agree more that …
This is not wrong, but we usually say, “I couldn’t agree more.”

This is just my imagination, though.
This is just my opinion, though.

Sorry but I’ve been under the weather for the past week and am not in the mood for a difficult topic.
Hope you feel better soon.

Many people seem to mix up corporal punishment and abuse.
Many people seem to confuse corporal punishment and abuse.
OR
Many people seem to use the terms “corporal punishment” and “abuse” interchangeably.

What I explained in my previous comment was 正当防衛。
What I was talking about in my previous comment was ….

Regarding the care for developmental disordered children,
Regarding the care of developmentally disordered children,
OR
Regarding the care of children with developmental disorders,

He is a developmental disorder child, too.
He suffers from a developmental disorder, too.

That’s all for this week. Have a great weekend, and I’ll be back with a new topic on Monday.

    Hi David,

    Thank you for your feedback!

    > I don’t know how you find the time!

Actually, it doesn’t take me so long to translate your entries. It usually takes me only for thirty minutes or an hour at longest, it depends on the contents. I can’t gurantee you that my translations are always correct, though!!
I enjoy posting comments during my work. It’s not so difficult because I correct my students’ papers with PC. Of course, I do around the house and look after my son, too. My current job enables me to do all those things, so I think I made the right choice. However, I’d like to work outside like Tomo when my son grows up.

    > if you had been naughty, the punishment was administered by the headmistress, not by the teacher whose class you had been naughty in.

    That’s a very interesting system!
I think I had little occasion to see my headmasters in my schooldays. – morning assembly and school ceremonies. Actually, I don’t remember any of them!!

    Hi mother members,

I’m going to receive my son’s kindergarten uniform, gym clothes, bag, and so on this afternoon.
I have to sew a 通園補助 bag, a bag for indoor shoes(上履き入れ), a bag for gym clothes, etc… myself. I have to put his name on all his belongings, too, even on his underpant or on every color of crayon!
It is really hard work, isn’t it?!

    Hi David,

    Thank you for your feedback!
It sure is a difficult matter whether corporal punishment by teachers should be allowed or not. But I certainly think bad behaviors/wrong acts by students are properly punished. (Including bullying-threatening, force someone to steal, be naked and assault) those acts are crime. If those acts are not overlooked, the number of wrong acts/ bullying by students might decrease. I’m sorry. I got off the topic.

    Hi David,

    Thanks for your feedback.

    >Many people seem to use the terms “corporal punishment” and “abuse” interchangeably.
I think this is what I wanted to say.

    Hi Biwa and David,

Thanks for your kind words. I wish I could tell you that I feel better now, though I am not:( You know, I can’t get used to the cold weather, even though I have lived here over two decades.

    Have a nice day everyone,
    amo

    Hi David,

Thank you so much for your feedback. It’s always very useful.
I didn’t know that you can say ‘I forget her name.’ I’m pretty sure I’ll have lots of opportunities to use the phrase!
I’m on the train now, and I don’t understand why they set the heaters so high. We’re all wearing coats, you know!

    Hi David and everyone,

I’m starting to think that I should have said “set the temperature so high” instead of “set the heaters so high”. It might have sounded like the heaters were set in a very high place! What are the words for 「ヒーターの温度を高く設定しすぎ!」in English?

  6. Mika on Monday January 21st, 2013 at 11:42 AM

    Hi Biwa,

I’m not sure, but how about this,
“The preset temperature (of the air conditioner)was too high!”

    Have a nice day.

  7. Biwa on Monday January 21st, 2013 at 02:22 PM

    Hi Mika,

    Thanks for your help!
Maybe I can also say “they preset the temperature too high”.

  8. David Barker on Monday January 21st, 2013 at 02:27 PM

    Hi Biwa,

“Set the temperature so high” and “set the heaters so high” are both fine.

  9. Biwa on Monday January 21st, 2013 at 03:02 PM

    Thanks, David!

The more I think, the more complicated I get. That means I’m not sure about the expression.
