Legalising Casinos

[wpaudio url=”https://www.btbpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Casinos.mp3″ text=”Click to listen”]

I have read a couple of articles recently about proposals to legalise casinos in Japan. I must admit that I was a bit confused at first, because I thought they were already legal.

The reason I thought this was that I used to have a student who told me that he had a part-time job in one, but I just googled it, and it seems that they are indeed illegal at the moment. I wonder where my student was working!

Anyway, a lot of people think that legalising casinos would give a huge boost to Japan’s economy. Many of the Japanese people who currently go to other countries to gamble would be able to spend their money at home, and it would also be very good for the tourism industry.

Of course, casinos also bring problems, most of which are connected to organised crime. The worry is that if casinos are built, they will provide groups like the yakuza with an opportunity to make huge amounts of money legally. This could lead to an increase in crime and other problems.

Another issue is dealing with gambling addicts, although as Japan already has many different forms of gambling such as keirin, keiba, and pachinko, I can’t see how adding casinos into the mix would make a big difference.

So what do you think? Should Japan legalise casinos, or do you think doing so would bring more problems than benefits?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

    Hi Tomo,

It’s nice to hear from you again!
Your comments always remind me of going “Back to Basics”. I like reading your natural, simple and accurate English. Of course, I like the contents, too!! :-p

    Hi David and everyone,

    > I wonder where my student was working!

I read there’re legal casino-like places called “Casino Bar” or “Amusument Casino” in Japan. Poeple play the same games there as you can do in the “real” casinos. It seemes to be legal and considered to be the same as “games” in the “game center” unless you convert your win into money.

About realizing casinos in Japan, I’m not sure if it would bring more problems than benefits or vice versa, but I heard it doesn’t always bring you benefits. Just about a week ago, I saw a TV report saying casinos in Macao gave a huge boost in Macao’s economy, but many of the casinos in South Korea(there’re 16 casinos in all) are in the red. So, the proposal itself is like a gambling, isn’t it? lol!

    Hi everyone,

To tell the truth, I’m not really sure whether we should legalize casinos or not. As David said, although gambling is supposed to be illegal in Japan, we already have many kinds. It seems like a mystery, but I guess everyone knows that it’s just another crooked and black side of this country.

For example, pachinko parlors seem to be legal because they say they don’t convert the balls into money, but everyone knows they can do it right behind the parlor. It’s just that the police receive bribery from the parlor owners. It is also said that the gambling industry has quite a few 天下りex-policemen. As the theory always goes, where there is money, there is power, there are lobbyists, and I think that is why gambling never disappears from this country. It is also said that many of the pachinko parlor owners are from North Korea. They seem to have strong connections with politicians and 朝鮮総連 which means lots of the money goes to North Korea without being charged.

I don’t gamble, and I don’t mean to criticize people who do, but isn’t it quite stupid that the money you pay to gamble is going to be used to develop missiles at the end? Of course, legalizing casinos would boost the economy, but I can’t help thinking that it’s just going to add to those dark business. I wonder if we can make a casino operated by the country, and make sure that the profit goes to Tohoku. If so, I would support the idea.

    Hi YU and everyone,

Yes, I found an article on the internet saying something similar. http://menzine.jp/trivia/nihondekajino3900/

According to the article, you need to add other values besides just building a casino to succeed in the business. For example, enrich various entertainments like Las Vegas or target rich Chinese people like Macao and Singapore. It also says that the Philippines has already started building a huge casino resort with four huge hotels, a “hanging garden”, and a theme-park run by the Universal Studio. I wonder if we really need that many casinos in Asia.

Another point that worries me is that one of the main supporters of this plan to legalize casinos in Japan is the mayor of Osaka, Mr. Hashimoto. Again! Him?!! It is said that one of the major amusement companies(including pachinko parlors) called マルハン is a strong supporter of 日本維新の会. Wouldn’t that be fishy already?

    Hi David and everyone,

Legalising Casinos? Mmm, I really don’t know much about this issue so I don’t have much to say. As you said, legalising casinos would give a huge boost to Japan’s economy, but also bring problems. So I really can’t say which is better. I myself rarely gamble. When I went to Las Vegas last May with my sister, we played slot machines because our hotel gave us coupons. I am too stingy to gamble!!

    Hi David and everyone,

I’m not interested in any gambling so I don’t know what it will be like if they built casinos in Japan. Reading David’s explanation, the government may want to build casinos to boost the economy and tourism) but considering conceivable problems (organised crime and people might become addicted to it), I don’t want to have casinos in Japan.
I don’t think casino itself is not so bad if people are not addicted to it. It’s one of entertainments.
Having said that, if casino was built in my city, the city would be crowded, busy and become a dangerous city and it’s scary. So if the mayor said they would build casino, I would protest him especially for my children’s safety.

YU and Biwa, thank you for telling us lots of information of this matter I didn’t know most of them.

    Correction:
    receive bribery⇒receive bribe

    Hi Fumie and everyone,

    >Having said that, if casino was built in my city, the city would be crowded, busy and become a dangerous city and it’s scary.

    Yes, I agree!
However, the article I mentioned above says there are about ten cities that has announced themselves as a candidate, and Sakai-city seems to be one of them. It also says that if you are going to target foreign money, the casino must be built near an international airport. So places such as Sakai, Odaiba(Tokyo), Chiba, Tokoname(Aichi) might be realistic if they are actually going to build one. Anyway, I really doubt if the project will be able to exclude those dirty power and money, so probably, ordinary people are not going to benefit from it at all.

  7. Fumie on Thursday December 12th, 2013 at 10:20 PM

    Hi Biwa,

Thank you for the explanation. Actually, Sakai is my husband’s hometown so if casino was built in the city, it would be totally different and roads would be crowded and that’s bothersome!

    Hi everyone,

This has nothing to do with the topic, but anyway, for my writing practice…(lol!)

It’s extremely windy today, and I was riding my bike back home from yoga class. The wind was so strong that I couldn’t make myself go forward, even an inch, no matter hard I pumped the pedals. I felt as if I were doing a comedy, and I’m sure I looked pretty funny. I leaned forward like a jockey, but it didn’t work. I think other people thought “What on earth is that オバサンtrying to do?!!” Anyway, I noticed a big garbage truck coming from behind, so finally gave up on the idea of actually “riding” it. I wonder if you have similar experiences. Are there any good ideas to ride a bike against the wind?

  9. Biwa on Friday December 13th, 2013 at 02:05 PM

Sorry, I made a mistake again!:
“no matter how hard”, “so I finally gave up”

  10. YU on Friday December 13th, 2013 at 03:05 PM

    Hi Biwa,

May I ask you why you stopped riding your bike noticing the garbage truck coming from behind?

  11. Biwa on Friday December 13th, 2013 at 03:35 PM

    Hi YU,

Because I couldn’t move forward! I might have got run over if I had just stayed on the bike being unable to go forward in the middle of the street.
