Tattoos (Feedback)

Thanks for all your comments. It was really nice to see comments both from new people and from others who we haven’t heard from for a while.

I think the idea of just writing one comment each per week was interesting, and it is definitely easier for me to give feedback when we have a lot of short comments from different people. Having said that, it would be nice to have some discussion as well, so I was thinking that maybe next week we could try one comment per day instead one per week just to see what happens. That would give people a chance to discuss the issues without the exchanges developing into long, complicated conversations. What do you think?

On the subject of tattoos, I have always thought it would be nice to have one on my upper arm, but I never got one for two reasons. The first is that I love onsens, so I don’t want to do anything that might get me banned. The second is that I am too chicken! I would probably end up telling the artist to stop halfway through, which would definitely not be a good look.

Tsuneko’s comment was particularly interesting for me because when I went to Australia last year, the thing that surprised me most was the number of young girls who had tattoos. I don’t have anything against tattoos, but I don’t think that children under the age of 18 should be allowed to have them. Maybe I am just being old-fashioned, but I don’t think that someone who is 16 is ready to make a decision about something that will stay with them for the rest of their life.

As for the Osaka case, I don’t think that a person’s tattoos should have any relevance to an employer unless they affect his or her ability to do the job. Having said that, I read in the article that a child had seen this particular woman’s tattoos and been scared by them, so it’s not a straightforward problem. Generally speaking, Western people tend to think that employers have no right to say anything about their employees’ private lives, but I know that is not the case in Japan.

Anyway, here is some feedback on your comments.

I do not get an special feeling form people with tattoos.
I do not have strong feelings about people with tattoos.

I don’t feel anything special as long as they aren’t too much.
I don’t have particularly strong feelings about tattoos as long as they are not excessive.

No, I think that it goes too far fire them.
No, I think that firing them is going too far.

I just think they are a bit showy types.
I just think that they are a bit showy.

So, I don’t have any more bad feeling about it.
So it doesn’t bother me anymore.

I personally think teachers shouldn’t have tattoos on their bodies.
Personally, I do not think teachers should have tattoos on their bodies. (A-Z: negative sentence word order)

Japan is way behind about this matter.
Japan is way behind on this issue. (“Way behind” is a nice expression.)

When she calls me to ask about Chinese characters, I don’t answer because it’s the time she’s planning a new design.
… I don’t answer because I know that she is only asking me because she’s planning a new design. (If you google “kanji tattoo mistakes,” you will find some funny photos.)

No I don’t think so, but like others said, it might depend on what the job is.
“It might depend on what the job is” is very nice.

I become worry particulary when I see young people with tattoos
I worry when I see young people with tattoos

if I am employer and find out that employee have tattoo on their body I might ask why they have it.
if I were an employer and found out that one of my employees had a tattoo, I might ask them why they had it. (A-Z: if/when)

I think it’s acceptable if the tattoo is a little and simple one in fashion,
I think it’s acceptable if the tattoo is small, simple, and just for fashion,

That’s it for today. Have a great weekend, and let me know if you have any questions about my feedback.

    Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback and I have a question about this correction.
    > I do not get an special feeling form people with tattoos.
I do not have strong feelings about people with tattoos.

One of my sentences was a similar to this one, so I was wondering if my sentence should be corrected, too?

    This is my sentence:
“I don’t get any special feelings from them.”

    >(If you google “kanji tattoo mistakes,” you will find some funny photos.)

My brother in law has some tattoos on his body. they are his wife’s name(it means my sister’s name) and their children’ names. When he had their oldest son’s name on his arm, he got a wrong kanji. Of course he got it corrected later(lol)

    Hi everyone,

How’s your weekend? it’s snowing here in Tokyo so it’s sooo cold. Please take care of yourself 🙂

    amo

    Hi amo,

“Special feeling” is a bit unnatural. A few people used it, though, so I guess it is a direct translation from Japanese. I wouldn’t say it in English.

    Hi David,

    Thank you for the feedback.
The word “type” is a tricky word, because we use it differently in Japanese. Would this sentence be okay? “He’s not the banker type.”

I enjoyed your idea of writing one comment each per week. It’s really nice to have many people joining in. I also realized that you have to quite think to keep your comment short and simple, so it was definitely a good exercise for me. If we keep trying to write simply as possible, I think “one comment per day” would be nice, too.

It’s been snowing since early this morning in Yokohama, too. It has already piled up to more than 8cm, which is quite unusual in the Kanto area. My sons are insisting that we should order Domino Pizza tonight and see if they would still deliver pizza within 30 minutes under this snow storm. What do you think?

    Hi David,
    Thank you for your feedback.
    >“Special feeling” is a bit unnatural. A few people used it, though, so I guess it is a direct translation from Japanese
—-oh, I see. Thanks for asking, amo.

I found it difficult to write the comment simple and short and I don’t think I’ve done it well. It was a good exercise.

By the way, I had chances to talk about tattoos with several people at several occasions. One of them showed me the process of getting the tattoo.

It was snowing here in Nagoya, too.

It was nice to see new people’s comments.

    Hi Animal Farm,
Glad to see your comment here again.

    Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback! Trying to write comments succinctly is a good exercise. I think short and concise commnts convey messages better than long and redundant ones.

It was snowing in the morning but it changed to cold rain later in Osaka.

    Hi Biwa,

Did you order pizza from Domino Pizza? Delivery job is tough under this terrible weather.

    Have a nice weekend!

    Hi David,

How about the snow in your area?

I have a question about your correction as follows:

    > if I am employer and find out that employee have > tattoo on their body I might ask why they have it.
    > (Your correction)if I were an employer and found out that one of
    > my employees had a tattoo, I might ask them why
    > they had it. (A-Z: if/when)

    1. ‘a’ before a noun tattoo.
    2. ‘,’ after the word body.
    3. Changed tense of the verb have to ‘had’

    1 is easy to understand.

I do not understand which correction has a relation to ‘if/when’.

Could you put clearer explanation, please?

    Gussan

Thank you for your feedback. I enjoyed this new system and it is a lot easier to read your feedback this time.
    See you next week,

    Hi David,

I’m sorry I’m late to say thank you for your corrections and feedback. As for the part you corrected, I had no confidence on it.

    >When she calls me to ask about Chinese characters, I don’t answer because I know that she is only asking me because she’s planning a new design.

I’d never made a sentence using ‘because’ twice like in yours. I’ll remember that.

    Hi Fumie,

After all, I just ignored my sons silly request and made a big pot of spicy Korean soup with some cod and tofu (鱈とお豆腐のチゲ♪) instead of pizza. Coincidentally, I saw a pizza-delivery bike skidding on the snowy street on TVnews this morning, so I think we did good by not ordering!

    Hi Biwa,

What you did was the right thing!

    Hi David,

    Thank you for your correction.

When I read about the new system, I thought“David said for me, it’s about me.”

If lower-level learners like me more comment on this blog, other people also might feel free to comment.

    Hi everyone,

When I heard “nice to have you with us”, how can I reply to the greeting?

  12. David on Monday February 10th, 2014 at 10:41 AM

    Hi Gussan,

Nice to hear from you again. “If/when” refers to the section in my grammar book that explains the point. If you have the book, please check under that key word. If you do not have the book, please just ignore the reference.

  13. David on Monday February 10th, 2014 at 10:50 AM

    Hi Mimi,

I’m glad you like the new system. I would love to have more comments from low-level learners, so please keep commenting.

If you are a new member and people say “Nice to have you with us,” you could say “Thanks for the warm welcome” or “Thanks for the nice comments.” If you have commented before, you could also write “It’s nice to be back.” (Does anyone have any other ideas?)

  14. Tsuneko on Monday February 10th, 2014 at 11:46 AM

Hi David, Mimi and other old and new members,

I forgot to tell you “Nice to have you with us” and “It’s nice to be back.”

Thanks for asking and answering, Mimi and David.

  15. Mimi on Monday February 10th, 2014 at 12:06 PM

Thank you for your feedback and advice.

Well then, everyone, thanks for the warm welcome!

    I liked this.

    Let’s keep in touch.

  16. Mimi on Monday February 10th, 2014 at 12:13 PM

    Hi Tsuneko,

I don’t care about it, and It’s nice to be back as well.

  17. Animal Farm on Monday February 10th, 2014 at 01:39 PM

    Hi David,

Thank you so much for your feedback. I appreciate it!

I think it’s an interesting idea to write one comment per day because people can discuss more and it’s easier to read. I’m looking forward to reading your next topic!

    Hi Anne,Thanks!
