Do You Have the Time? (Feedback)

Thanks for all the comments. I’m glad you liked the nice, easy topic. Some of you were having a discussion about the difference between “always” and “usually,” but I think you were overanalysing it a bit. The meaning of both words is straightforward, but as with most words, their true meaning in a sentence depends on the context. “Always” does mean いつも, but in a sentence like “I always wear a watch,” it means “I always wear a watch at times when it would be sensible to wear a watch.” For example, if someone said, “I always take a shower in the morning,” nobody would think that meant “even if I go camping” or “even when I climbed Mt. Everest.” Here is some feedback on your comments.

I do the same thing as I did when it was 10 or 20 years ago.
I do the same thing I did 10 or 20 years ago.

I have a digital watch for running.
Nice sentence.

I don’t wear a watch anymore because of the same reason as yours.
I don’t wear a watch anymore for the same reason as you.

I have about 4 or 5 wrist watches but I don’t use them anymore and their batteries were dead.
… and their batteries are dead. / … and their batteries have died.

BTW, “Do you have the time?” means “what’s time is it?”, right? And “Do you have time?” means like “Can I talk to you for a minute?”. These two sentences are confusing for me.
That’s right. It is a bit confusing.

Here are my answers for your questions:
Here are my answers to your questions:

Yes, I was a person who always wearing a watch.
Yes, I always used to wear a watch.

It was a wind-up type(I am not sure if it’s proper words for 手巻き時計)
That expression is fine.

Like Gussan, I wear a watch when I go out and take it off as soon as I get home.
Nice sentence.

I usually at home,
I’m usually at home,

One of his is similar to the one in the picture on the blog.
Nice sentence.

It’scorching hot today, isn’t it?
Apparently, it was 39 degrees in Gifu City on Thursday! I thought I was going to melt.

but it’s easier for me to make sure the time with the watch.
but it’s easier for me to check the time with the watch. (A-Z: make sure)

As Gussan says, “watches” is rather a men’s topic.
I think Amo might disagree!

Watches and other props play an important role in making movies and dramas better.don’t they?
Companies pay a lot of money to have characters in movies and on TV use their products. It’s called “product placement.” Have you ever noticed that if you ever see someone using a laptop computer in a movie, nine times out of ten it will be a Mac?

You are supposed to carrry 24kg of a can on your shoulder. Wow, you are strong!
You are supposed to carry a 24 kg can on your shoulder? Wow, you must be strong! [Not really. It’s only for a short time.]

I have a no choice because I have only one watch which I can wear.
I have no choice because I only have one watch that I can wear.

I see. Tonari san does his job for bike races?
Yes, he does. I sometimes joke with him that it would be easier to arrange for his salary to go directly to the bike shop. It’s a very expensive hobby, but he loves it. He says that he wants to get married and have kids, but I think it will be difficult for him to find a woman who is prepared to let him spend so much money on his bikes.

I don’t know if it’s true or not, in Europe some people work just to have a great vacation…
That is a common way of thinking in the West.

When I carelessly lost my only watch about 7years ago,I was a bit panicked.
…, I panicked a bit.

I think it will never change even 10 years from now.
I don’t think it will ever change. (A-Z: negative sentence word order)

When I meet new people, I usually check if he/she is punctual or not.
When I meet new people, I usually check if they are punctual or not.

I happened to come across the site while I was browsing by putting “movies+watches” in the blank.
I happened to come across the site when I did a search for “movies+watches.”

Three museums? You must’ve been tired at that night.
Three museums? You must’ve been tired that night.

Now he is famous on this blog, isn’t he?
Tonari San checks the blog from time to time. I’m sure he will be glad to hear that he is famous!

I suppose words have some umbiguity in their meanings to some extent. So, both of them can be used in the same meaning.
That is correct.

That’s all for today. I’m doing a presentation for high-school teachers in Gifu tomorrow, and I’m going rafting on Sunday. Have a great weekend, and I’ll be back on Monday. (Let me know if you have any questions about parts of the comments that I didn’t mention.)

    Hi David,

    Thank you for your feedback!

    >I usually at home,
    I’m usually at home,

Oh no, I forgot to put a be-verb!

I have some questions about this sentence.

    >Anyway, I like my husband’s favorite watch too, because I picked it out when he was torn between the one and the other.

    1) I used a comma before “because” to make the meaning clear; my reason for saying this. Does it work? Or I shouldn’t have used it??

    2) I wanted say, ”他の時計とどっちにしようか迷っている時に私が選んだから”, but I’d never used the expression “be torn between A and B”, so I’m not sure if it fits here or not.

    3) I first wrote “one and the other”, but I changed it to “THE one and the other” because I thought readers knew which one I meant. でもやっぱり”the one and the other” はあまり聞かないような気がして。。。

    Please help me!

    Hi David,

    Thank you for your feedback!

As for “always” and “usually”, I might have thought too much… I never thought that my small complaint would cause such a big discussion!

By the way, I went to “Traffic Safety Class for Kids”(交通安全教室)with my son this morning. I received a pamphlet that explains the use rate of child safety seats for kids under 6 is only 57%!!, which is much lower than I expected!
And I knew for the first time today that kids under 6 are not allowed to walk alone or ride a bicycle on the strees by the traffic laws. To tell the truth, my son sometimes goes to the park by his bicycle(of course, I always walk just beside his bicycle, though…). So, I have been violating the traffic regulation since long!!!

    > Companies pay a lot of money to have characters in movies and on TV use their products. It’s called “product placement.”

    I didn’t know the word.
It sounds a bit like “tie-up advertisements”.
Japanese people often use the terms like “タイアップ” or “コラボ”.

    > I sometimes joke with him that it would be easier to arrange for his salary to go directly to the bike shop.

I think so too. Why doesn’t he that? I’m joking!

    > He says that he wants to get married and have kids, but I think it will be difficult for him to find a woman who is prepared to let him spend so much money on his bikes.

    Indeed…
I know I’m not entitled to stand for(立候補!?) his wife any more, but I’m very anxious about accidents as well as about money… I’m a worrier, so I don’t think I can marry a man whose occupation(or hobby) is a racer, a boxer, a climber, and so on…
So, why doesn’t he try to find someone who has the same hobby as him?? Am I a staff of the marriage agency!?

    > Tonari San checks the blog from time to time. I’m sure he will be glad to hear that he is famous!

    Oh, does he?
    Hello Tonari san!
Unfortunately, I can’t see you riding in the Suzuka 8-hour race. Apparently, it will be aired only on スカパー & 中部放送… However, I’ll cheer for your team!
Take care and good luck with the race!!

    Hi Tomo,

I’m not really familiar with the differences between SMSs and 携帯メール. The only difference I know is that SMSs are sent to the recipient’s phone number, not to the メルアド. Actually, when I lived in Germany, no one had メルアド, so inevitably everyone used SMS services. I don’t know about the current situation or how it is in other European countries. FYI, my husband sometimes receives SMSs from his family or friends in his country, so probably some Asian coutries don’t have 携帯メール services as well??? I’m sorry, I can’t answer you well…

David, good luck with your presentation and enjoy rafting on Sunday!
    Have a great weekend, everyone!

    Hi David.
    Thank you for your feedback!

    >I was a bit panicked.
    …, I panicked a bit.

Woo….I don’t know how many times I made the same mistake which is so silly..

    >I’m doing a presentation for high-school teachers in Gifu tomorrow, and I’m going rafting on Sunday

You are busy as usual. Have a nice weekend!

    Hi YU and Tomo.
Thank you for your comments yesterday!

I’m still really cautious about the time despite of not wearing a watch. People aroung me say I’m too nervous about this but I don’t like making someone wait for me long time much more than I wait for someone…and also hate to be late for work or schools.
My husband is completely opposite to me.Seeing him preparing for important appointment at his own pace, it sometimes makes me so nervous and impatient worriying that he is going to be late!!

    Have a great weekend everyone!

    Hi Tomo,

I have some questions about this sentence.

    >Anyway, I like my husband’s favorite watch too, because I picked it out when he was torn between the one and the other.

    1) I used a comma before “because” to make the meaning clear; my reason for saying this. Does it work? Or I shouldn’t have used it??

I think either way would be okay. The comma is not necessary, but iIt’s a long sentence, so the comma makes it easier to read.

    2) I wanted say, ”他の時計とどっちにしようか迷っている時に私が選んだから”, but I’d never used the expression “be torn between A and B”, so I’m not sure if it fits here or not.

“Torn between” is correct, but it sounds a bit OTT (over the top = 大げさ) here. Have a look at this video.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1F5BLLFAeM

    3) I first wrote “one and the other”, but I changed it to “THE one and the other” because I thought readers knew which one I meant. でもやっぱり”the one and the other” はあまり聞かないような気がして。。。

“One or the other” is a kind of fixed expression. I think the most natural way to say your sentence would be “Anyway, I like my husband’s watch too because I helped him to choose it.”

    Hope that helps.

  6. YU on 2012年07月20日 at 15:51

    Hi rinko,

I’m very sure you won’t be able to survive in the countries where people are less conscious about the time, such as Spain or Italy…!! 🙂
I heard trains almost never arrive on time there or people are so unpunctual that they seldom appear at the appointed time!

I have a friend from India. She is a nice person, but very unpunctual. So, when I see her, I usually tell her 15~30 minutes before the time I really want to meet, but still she is often late, though…. 😉

    > My husband is completely opposite to me.Seeing him preparing for important appointment at his own pace, it sometimes makes me so nervous and impatient worriying that he is going to be late!!

Hahaha…I know what you mean, but I think that is… “There is no pot so ugly that a cover cannnot be found for it.(割れ鍋に綴じ蓋)”!! If both your husband and you were the same type of person, I don’t think you would get along well with each other. I’m a worrier, but my husband is a super easy-going person(but at least he is punctual), but I feel more comfortable when I’m with people who don’t care tiny matters, because I care too much. 🙂

    Hi Tomo,

I had a look at the video.
Her song reminds me of the song of Do you remember the song!?

“けんかをやめて~、二人を止めて~、私のために争わないで、もうこれ以上 違うタイプの人を好きになってしまう 揺れる乙女心 よくあるでしょう? だけど どちらとも 少し距離をおいて うまくやって行ける 自信があったの~ ごめんなさいね わたしのせいよ 二人の心をもてあそんで ちょっぴり 楽しんでたの 思わせぶりな態度で だから けんかをやめて~ 二人を止めて~….”

I wonder how clearly I still remember the lylics…
Anyway, she(in this song) is 塩谷瞬の女性版!?

    Hi David,

Thank you! That’s a big help. I had a look at the video and read the lyrics, and I understand why it sounds a bit OTT. “Torn between two lovers”, that’s a very serious problem!!

“Anyway, I like my husband’s watch too because I helped him to choose it.”

I see. I should have followed the KISS rule(Keep It Short and Simple). Thank you! 🙂

    Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

    Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback as always.
    >but it’s easier for me to make sure the time with the watch.
but it’s easier for me to check the time with the watch. (A-Z: make sure)
—Oh, I’m afraid I need to re-read the book from cover to cover.
“Make sure” cannot be followed by a noun and that’s the reason you corrected my sentence, right?
I see. By the way, in the book, you pick up one example sentence:
*Please make sure (that) you lock the door before you leave.
In this sentence, is it possible to use “IF” instead of “that”? in Japanese, so this idea came to mind.

    >I happened to come across the site while I was browsing by putting “movies+watches” in the blank.
I happened to come across the site when I did a search for “movies+watches.”
—-Actually I used “when” and “did the search(not ‘a’!)”first, but changed the sentence
and using “while” sounded natural to me in a progressive sentence. Thank you.

    >Have you ever noticed that if you ever see someone using a laptop computer in a movie, nine times out of ten it will be a Mac?

—I didn’t notice that, but it’s a kind of strategy of the company. If I remember correctly, Starbucks don’t commercial its products on TV, but its logo appear in a lot of movies and those appearances help consumers to have a fashionable and good brad image of Starbucks.
You can see some of the appearances in the movies from the following site and you’ll be suprised to know how many times you see company’s logo in the movies.
    http://www.listal.com/list/starbucks-in-movies

I had a look at the site you introduced, and her song is beautiful and nostalgic.

    Good luck with the presentation!
    >I’m going rafting on Sunday.
    —That sound thrilling. Enjoy yourself.

    Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

    Anne

    Hi Anne,

You couldn’t use “if” instead of “that,” but you could say “Please check whether you locked the door.” Thanks for the link. I’ll take a look at it later.

    Hi amo,

Actually, I felt the same way as you, but I thought that she meant “Yes, my answer would have been different((b) → (a)).”

    Have a great weekend!

    Hi Anne,

Speaking of “Starbucks”, American TV series, “Ally Macbeal”(アリーmy love) for me. It was aired on NHK several years ago. Have you ever watched it? In the series Ally always buys a cup of cappucchino at Starbucks before going to work.
I heard that was how Starbucks Coffee rapidly spread across Japan.
BTW, when Calista Flockhart(Ally) got married with Harrison Ford, I was really surprised!!

    Correctly “Ally Mcbeal”.

    Hi David,

Thank you for the feedback! It took me less time to write comments this time because the topic was easier one. My goal of English study is to be able to write or speak what I want to convey without taking much time and not looking up words or phrases. Having said that, when the topic is difficult, it. takes me long hours to write comments even in Japanese.
Good luck with the presentation and have fun on rafting!

    Hi Anne,

Thank you for introducing us an interesting site!
How do you find those good ones? You often find various, attracting sites and introduce us here, or on your blog and facebook.

    Hi everyone,

Summer vacation starts from tomorrow in my area. I’m not happy about that because children are at home during daytime. I can’t have quiet, relaxing time for about a month. :-< Do you have any special plans during holiday, going somewhere or doing something? We are only going to a 1-day trip to the beach. My eldest son will take an entrance examination, so we can't go on a trip for long. I'm going to study English with him for his examination.

Have a lovely weekend and fabulous holiday!

    Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback, but I think I need some more feedback from you. I know you will be busy on this weekend but if you have time please help me.

    >The meaning of both words is straightforward, but as with most words, their true meaning in a sentence depends on the context.
I see what you mean, but I just curious to know what their true meaning in your question? I just simply want to know what you meant in your case. So can I ask you how do you translate this question into Japanese?

    1) Do you wear a watch (a) always, (b) usually, or (c) never?

Because, I took your sentence like this:
    時計をつけますか?(a)いつも (b)大抵 (b)つけない
So when I read your question, I just simply thought that I still wear a watch, but much less than I used to do. That’s the reason that my answers:
    1) b, and 2) a.
Hope you understand what I want to say.
By the way, rafting sounds nice. Hope you have a blast over the weekend 🙂

    Hi Tomo,

    >I think you can use “always” if it’s not “100%” because it also can be used as in “often”

Yes, I know that, but I just focused on David’s three choices a)always, b) usually and c) never at that time. I know, both of “always” and “usually” can be translated “いつも” in Japanese, but if David had meant the same way, I can’t understand why he gave us three choices. He should have asked simple yes no question.

    >今、前のエントリーのコメントを読み直してみたのですが、もしかしたら根本的なところに誤解があるのかな?と思ったので説明させてください。

YUの疑問が私には理解できてなかったみたいです。私は1)の質問で選択肢があったの、単純に2)でもそれに倣うのかと思いました。何故なら2)の質問“Would your answer have been different if I had asked you this question 10 or 20 years ago?” :(

Have a nice weekend, everyone 😉

    Hi amo and Tomo,

I’m sorry for making you both think so much about my small question… 🙁

    Hi Fumie,

I see. Every mother around me says the same as you. They love their children, but vacation periods seem to be “hell” for mothers…. ;-(

I’m going to 箱根ユネッサン for 2 nights 3 days with my family. Have you ever heard of the name? ユネッサン has a large variety of swimming pools and a big water slide, as well as many “unique” hot springs(ワイン風呂、ガリガリ君ソーダ風呂、ドクターフィッシュ風呂等々). It’s just like “Spa Resort Hawaiians” in Fukushima. Actually, I prefer to stay at Ryokan, eat 舟盛り and enjoy bathing all day, but as you know, it doesn’t satisfy 3-year-old boy at all….sigh….

It’s not really nice to hear that your son has to stay at home to study for his entrance exams… Young days never returns again, don’t you think so? I really think that Japan should change the school(university)entrance systems!

  18. Anne on 2012年07月21日 at 08:26

    Hi David,

    Thank you for your reply.
I guess this question came up because I translated the sentence “..閉めたか*どうか*確認してください” in Japanese. The phrase “~かどうか”reminded me of “if(whether)…or not.”
“Make sure(or check ?)” implies certainty and “if” implies possibility, so using both of them in the same sentence doesn’t make sense, and I got what had said. Having said that, I’m still confuesd why “whether” is OK and “if” is incorrect because “whether” and “if” are often interchangeable even though there are some exceptions. Anyway thank you for your help and I’ll add the information that “if is incorrect” in my book.

    Hi YU,
“Ally Mcbeal” was one of my favorites. As you said, “a cup of cappuccino” in the drama helped this product or name spread in Japan.
    > when Calista Flockhart(Ally) got married with Harrison Ford, I was really surprised!!
    —Me too!!!
    > as well as many “unique” hot springs(ワイン風呂、ガリガリ君ソーダ風呂、ドクターフィッシュ風呂
Have a great time with various kinds of springs and cuisine! By the way, I like ”がりがり君アイス.”

    Hi Fumie,
It’s simple; just type some words or phrases in the blank and then you’ll see lots of headlines. All you have to do is choose one or two articles and have a look at them. It doesn’t mean I read all of them, but “have a look at them.”
I guess it’s just from my curiosity. I’m interested in various things; what is the background? oh, what about the image of Starbucks in the movies (because I often see logo in the movies.) I guess it’s the style of mind map and this way of thinking helps you spread your ideas, especially when you discuss something. David also referred to this on the blog.(Sorry, I couldn’t find the article because it wasn’t the tile of the entry.)
    Here’s the site of Mmindmap:

    It’s me again.
I forgot to say one more thing.
As for the translation, “帰る前に忘れずにドアを閉めてね.” would be natural.

    Hi amo and YU,

    1) Do you wear a watch (a) always, (b) usually, or (c) never?

    Yes, (b)

    Hi Fumie,

    >I’m not happy about that because children are at home during daytime. I can’t have quiet, relaxing time for about a month.

I know exactly what you mean!! 1

By the way, we are planning to go on a two-day and one-night trip to Hakuba. Like your son, my son has to study for the entrance exams, but he is still busy doing club activities!

    Hi Fumie and Anne,

I had a look at the site of “Mindmap”.
I didn’t know the word “Mindmap”, but I knew a similar strategy, called “メモリーツリー” which was introduced on TV some years ago by a Tokyo University student. According to him, he studied by using the “メモリーツリー” strategy and entered Tokyo University…, but I guess mainly he was just smart from the beginning. 🙂

    >トピックが難しいと、日本語ですら意見をまとめるのに時間がかかる。

Me too, but I always try to post my first comment on topics as soon as possible. The reasons are :

    1) I don’t think my comments need to be perfect, both grammar and contents. I’m not a native speaker of English nor a scholar. Is this 開き直り?

    2) Everyone might feel easier to make comments on someone else’s ideas than getting their ideas in shape and write comments themselves. Of course, I know people like you, Anne, Tomo, amo or other regular members don’t need such a support, but I hope it will be of some help to beginners even a little.

I think that is every learner’s goal!
However, it is also very important to learn correct grammars or phrases. For example, I made a mistake in my comment for you. I wrote “two nights three days”(二泊三日), but correctly it should be “three days and two nights”. Mine is just a literal translation = 2夜3日, but it isn’t correct!!
What I want to say is that I read and write relatively fast, but it contains a lot of mistakes. I think myself, this is my good point and bad point. I guess I learned to do this way through my former job. Anyway, I needed to read e-mails and reply to our clients as soon as possible. They prefer people who respond in an hour with 80% accuracy in English than those who reply with 100% accuracy, but first next morning.

    See you !

    Hi Tomo,

    Sounds delicious!! LOL

    See you !

    Hi everyone, (especially female members!)

I came across a controversial article and discussed it with English club memebers the other day. The article isn’t very new, but I learned a lot of new facts about women’s body….Please have a look if you have time.

    http://www.japantoday.com/category/kuchikomi/view/if-you-want-a-child-do-it-before-youre-30-says-leading-obstetrician

Personally, I believe all the women in the world should know this fact as soon as possible, but it could work both ways, and has pros and cons.

This news would encourage women to have babies at earier age, which would result in the increase of healthy babies.

On the other hand, women who are already over 35 might lose hope, fear having handicapped babies and give up the idea of having a baby.
Theoretically, women have to stop pursuing higher careers or enjoying their twenties as there is no time to delay marriage and childbirth.

I, myself gave birth to my son at 38 without any infertility treatments, and that was really I was just lucky…

By the way, it is said that male infertility contributes to more than half of all cases of childlessness, actually…. However, most people just don’t know that infertility is not always women’s fault. That’s very unfair.

Anyway, women should make a decision carefully and have a baby when the time is right.

(Do you like A or B?

LOL! You are so funny!

As for the article you mentioned, I’ve already read it and talked about it with you when we discussed “Legal Minors”, so let me skip it this time. 😉

    Hi David,

How was the presentation? I hope it went well, and have a great time tomorrow!!

Hope you are all having a nice weekend,

    Tomo

    Hi Tomo and everyone,

I’m sorry, I totally forgot that I’ve introduced the site to you before, but anyway, that is a very important issue for all the women in the world, especially I want young women to read the article…

    Hummmm…. I’m losing memory… 🙁

    Hi YU,

Have fun there. In Osaka, there is a place called, Spaworld. We can swim in the pool and take various kinds of baths which feature each countries.

    >Anyway, I needed to read e-mails and reply to our clients as soon as possible.

That’s the reason you can write comments early and often. I usually write comments and check several times before I post them.

    Hi Tomo and YU,

    >Like your son, my son has to study for the entrance exams, but he is still busy doing club activities!

I think it’s wonderful that your son has something he can enjoy himself very much. Like YU said, you can’t have young days again. Let them enjoy adolescent years while they can!

    Hi Anne,

Thank you for telling us about mind map.

    >I guess it’s the style of mind map and this way of thinking helps you spread your ideas, especially when you discuss something.

Coincidentally, a few of my coworkers talked about how effective mind map was the other days. And we are going to have a lesson of mind map next month.

    Hi David
Thank you for your feedback and explanation about “always” and “usually”.
I haven’t read all of your feedback yet. I will read them later.

    Hi Tomo
I’m sorry for mistyping your name!
Actually, my cellphone has a English dictionary.
Sometimes it automatically corrects a word if it considers this word typo obviously.
“Tomo” is not in the dictionary, but “Toni” is.
When I type “Tomo”, then my phone consider “Oh, you wanted to type Toni, don’t you? I correct!”
I always retype your name but missed last time, sorry!

    Hi trmr,

I didn’t know that mobile phones have a useful feature like that! I thought you wrote the comment on your computer and mistyped it because “N” is next to “M” and “I” is next to “O.” (I assume that you can type without looking at the keyboard.)

Anyway, as I said earlier, don’t worry about that 😉

    Have a good day!

    Tomo
